UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced Select Technology from ACTIVE Network ® to Operate Campus Recreation Programs

Active Network’s Software Now Used by a Third of All California Public Universities

SAN DIEGO, CA – September 8, 2010 – Today, The Active Network, Inc., a technology and media company, announced that two more schools, UC Santa Cruz and UC Merced, from the University of California system have selected Active Network’s operations management software and hosted technology for their campus recreation departments. Active Network’s Web-based campus recreation software, available through its Communities division, will allow the schools to improve the efficiency of daily operations, increase customer service and reduce overall operating costs for their campus recreation departments.

The Office of Physical Education, Recreation Sports (OPERS) at UC Santa Cruz is the first UC school to adopt Active Network’s fully hosted, Software as a Service (SaaS) model for campus recreation. With Active Network’s hosted software solution, OPERS can manage all operations on a single platform system without any capital expenses for costly database or Web servers. Active Network hosts and manages the data securely using the latest technology infrastructure. The new system also provides OPERS the ability to increase its overall operational efficiency, specifically in recreational programming, membership management, outdoor recreation programs and intramural sports. This will help provide improved comprehensive fitness, recreation and wellness programs to the students and Santa Cruz community.

“Using Active Network’s campus recreation software, UC Santa Cruz’s OPERS has moved its operations from a labor intensive and expensive process to a management system that streamlines procedures, is user friendly and most of all, cost effective,” said Todd Hammonds, facility manager of OPERS, UC Santa Cruz.

Built in 2005, and the newest university of the UC system, UC Merced’s Recreation and Athletics Department is quickly expanding its available offerings which include intramural sports, open recreation, adult recreation classes, sport clubs, fitness programs and special interest programs to its students and community. Similar to the system used by UC Santa Cruz, Active Network’s software solutions allow the Recreation and Athletics Department to consolidate all operation channels to a single system.

“As the UC Merced campus continues to grow, we needed to find an operating solution that could expand with the department’s increased offerings and provide all the functionality necessary to continue seamless daily operations,” said David Dunham, director of recreation for UC Merced. “Active Network’s track record working with so many other universities in the state, especially in the UC system, provided us the assurance and comfort that their campus recreation software was the right choice.”

“We are excited to provide these prestigious universities the technology to operate their recreation departments more efficiently and at a lower operating cost, allowing them to provide a better product to their campus recreation participants,” said James Reyes, general manager of Active Network’s Communities division.

These schools join UC Santa Barbara and UC Irvine from the UC system and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Fullerton, Humboldt, Los Angeles, Sacramento, San Bernardino, San Francisco, San Jose and Long Beach from the California State school system, as universities that have chosen Active Network technology solutions.
