Active Network Commits to Driving 100,000 Consumers to the President’s Million PALA Challenge

New Active Trainer Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) Training Program Launched to Promote Healthy Lifestyles and Counter Nation’s Obesity Crisis

SAN DIEGO, CA – April 4, 2011 The Active Network, Inc., the leading provider of organization-based cloud computing applications, today announced its support of the President’s Challenge, a program of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN). Active Network has signed on to become a President’s Challenge Advocate and promote the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award (PALA) by encouraging 100,000 participants to join the President’s Million PALA Challenge by September 2011. PALA is for people of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities and supports the First Lady’s Let’s Move! initiative to end childhood obesity within a generation by encouraging more youth and families to get and stay active.
Active Network’s commitment to the Million PALA Challenge coincides with the latest version of its Active.com Trainer program. Active.com Trainer allows participants to log and share their progress towards achieving the President’s Challenge and receive a badge for their accomplishments. Consumers new to fitness and running can also take advantage of Active Network’s Couch to 5K training program to slowly progress toward their fitness goals and earn a PALA badge.

“We believe Active Network can play an important role in combating the nation’s obesity epidemic by fostering active and healthy living,” said Dave Alberga, chief executive officer of The Active Network, Inc. “According to some studies, roughly two thirds of U.S. citizens are either overweight or obese. These statistics are staggering, and any help we can provide in mitigating this national health crisis is an effort worth making.”

According to The Partnership for a Healthier America, "The United States is projected to spend $344 billion in obesity-related health care costs in 2018 if obesity levels continue to increase at their current rate." PALA is an easy way for Americans to commit to healthier living. Adults who are active 30 minutes per day and youth who are active 60 minutes per day, five days per week, for a period of six out of eight weeks are eligible for this award.
