Training application is the first to offer free GPS and discounted 5K race registration
SAN DIEGO, CALIF. – August 23, 2011 – Active.com®, a media property of Active Network, and the leading online community that connects people with the sports and activities they love to do, announced today a new iPhone application that encourages people to get off the couch and onto the roads with the Active.com Couch-to-5K® Running Plan.
The mobile application is the first of its kind to let runners track their route and distance with free GPS, and also the first that allows users to complete their training by registering for a 5K through the app for a special discount. The application is available for download at the iPhone App store for $1.99.
"Social media and mobile technology are truly changing how people train for and participate in activities," said Brian Enge, vice president of strategic projects at Active Network. "This application capitalizes on mobile and social trends to help people progress on their fitness journey with a personalized mobile trainer and access to an inspirational community."
The Couch-to-5K application is geared toward those new to exercise and, through a day-by-day fitness program, helps them eventually run a full 5K race, or 3.1 miles. User-friendly features include iTunes music integration, the ability for users to track their pace, and a choice of three personalized trainers – Constance, Billie and Sergeant Block – to help runners stay motivated. Each of the Couch-to-5K personalized trainers incorporates a real human voice, corresponds with a different exercise style and regiment, and provides their own motivational messages and advice.
Runners will find the training fits easily into their daily routine, with each session lasting about 20 to 40 minutes, three times a week for nine weeks. The trainer builds up the user’s endurance by slowly increasing the difficulty of workouts as the runner progresses. After users complete the training program, they are eligible to receive $1 off select 5K race registrations for a limited time in their area when registering through the application.
In addition to the personal trainers, those new to running will also find encouragement, support and motivation on social media channels and in the broader Active.com community. Active Network recently found that roughly 83 percent of its Active.com Trainer online beta participants posted their progress on Facebook. With the encouragement of their friends and connections in these networks, users are likely to find greater success in reaching their fitness goals.
