Aetna and Active Network Help People Step Up Their Activity Levels

Aetna EveractiveSM program helps members and others become more physically active, get virtual support and connect to local events and groups

HARTFORD, Conn., and San Diego, Calif., June 6, 2012 — Aetna (NYSE: AET) and Active Network (NYSE: ACTV) aim to help members become more physically active through Aetna Everactive, a new social community that brings together virtual health and fitness resources with opportunities to participate in real-life local events.

When people join Aetna Everactive, they get both encouragement and easy-to-follow, step-by-step guides to health and fitness for all fitness levels. They also get integrated access to Active.com®, the leading online community for people who want to discover, participate in and share activities about which they are passionate, and Aetna’s custom version of Active.com Trainer to help coach and motivate users on their fitness journey. Aetna Everactive lets its community members search for fitness activities and things to do in their area (such as walks and runs) by asking them where they want to start.

Aetna largest customers – those with 3,000 or more employees – now can offer Aetna Everactive to all of their employees, at no cost to the employer. Employees as well as family and friends can access features on the site at no cost, including premium content and customized training plans. Aetna will make the program available to smaller employers and individual plan members later this year.

“Aetna Everactive is a powerful tool to help people become more active, support them through their journey, and help them reach out to get family and friends involved as well,” said Michael J. Guyette, President, Aetna National Accounts. “Today’s employers understand that wellness is an important factor in their health care costs. We’re giving Aetna’s customers an integrated program to help encourage greater fitness in their workforce, complete with a communications toolkit they can use to engage their employees.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 60 percent of adults do not achieve the recommended amount of regular physical activity. In fact, 25 percent of all adults are not active at all. Physical activity can help reduce the risk of heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, control weight and build healthy bones, muscles, and joints, among other benefits.

“Today, overall wellness and preventive health measures have never been more important and incorporating some form of activity is a key pillar to maintaining good health,” said Dave Alberga, chief executive officer at Active Network. “Our consumer wellness offering sprang from our own ActiveX workplace wellness program which has fostered healthier living and employee engagement for the past ten years. Aetna is the first health plan to take advantage of our consumer wellness resources through the Aetna Everactive program and should stand as a model for how organizations can encourage individuals to adopt a more active lifestyle and benefit from improved health.”

People who join the Aetna Everactive community can get online and mobile support to become active, from simple activities like walking every day, to setting and sticking with a weight loss program, and even stepping up to the Active.com Couch to 5K training plan. In addition, Aetna Everactive community members can take a 30-day push-up challenge, find local events, earn points and badges, and celebrate their success with their friends and family.

Later this year, Aetna Everactive will be enhanced to include activities families can plan and do together, such as youth sports and integrated training plans. Members of the site will be able to create their own teams that encourage life-long fitness such as golf, tennis and swimming, and will get access to a full nutrition capability such as menu planning and shopping lists. In the future, they also will be able to purchase discounted health and fitness goods and apparel through the site.
