ACTIVE Network | IPICO Achieves World-Class Accuracy for Timing Technology at Tokyo Marathon

With Japanese Partner, R’bies, Nearly 500,000 Separate Splits Recorded With Greater Than 99.99% Accuracy

DALLAS – March 5, 2015 – ACTIVE Network® the global leader in Activity and Participant Management™ and data solutions, today announced world-class success in timing accuracy by its IPICO race timing system used at the sold-out, 9th edition of the Tokyo Marathon. More than 34,000 runners finished the iconic event, including multiple Olympic champions, elites, and recreational runners, from both Japan and around the world. For the fourth consecutive year, the timing technology, which included real-time athlete tracking and live results, was provided by IPICO, now part of ACTIVE Network, using its industry-leading, dual frequency RFID system, and included a commemorative souvenir tag for every athlete to take home as a memento from the event.

ACTIVE Network | IPICO’s technology was used by its local partner, R’bies, an industry leader in timing services to major events over the last 25 years. In a little over seven hours, the team timed 34,530 finishers at 14 timing points throughout the race course, recording 483,420 different splits at greater than 99.99% accuracy. ACTIVE Network | IPICO and R’bies also provided real-time data to three live TV stations and five social networks, all of whom published live updates to millions of spectators at the event, online, and watching the broadcast on television.

“Accurate timing is required for any race, but especially for events of this size and prestige that are being watched live by millions of spectators in person, via social channels and on television,” said Darko Dejanovic, CEO at ACTIVE Network. “We are very proud of our timing partner Motohiko Kato and the R’bies team for their accuracy using ACTIVE Network | IPICO technology. Read rates of 99.0% to 99.5% are considered by many as the timing accuracy industry standard for an event of this nature; by achieving greater than 99.99% accuracy across an event of this size, scale, and complexity, R’bies and our IPICO technology have exceeded that standard and truly raised the bar for world-class timing accuracy results.”

“The Tokyo Marathon Foundation is delighted with the performance achieved by our timing partner, R’bies, using ACTIVE Network | IPICO sports technology,” said Tadaaki Hayano, Race Director and Chief Strategic Officer for Tokyo Marathon Foundation. “It is an excellent result. The last four years have been so successful and, again, we thank R’bies and ACTIVE Network | IPICO who have exceeded our expectations of world-class timing.”

The Tokyo Marathon is the only Asian stage of the Abbott World Marathon Majors. The race starts at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Office and runs through the heart of many of Tokyo’s famous districts such as Ginza, Hibaya, and the Imperial Palace. The event took place on Sunday, February 22, 2015.

“We are delighted that we achieved great success at the Tokyo Marathon 2015 using ACTIVE Network | IPICO timing tags and equipment,” said Motohiko Kato, Head Timer for RECS, the timing division of R’bies Japan. “We set 14 timing points including the start and finish line and have achieved greater than 99.99% read rate with the IPICO Tokyo Marathon souvenir design tags. These are wonderful results.”
