Brighton Marathon Engages Participants and Spectators with Innovative Technology Developed by ACTIVE Network

Grounded Events Company Leverages Suite of ACTIVE Event Lifecycle Management Solutions to Engage Over 13,000 Participants and 45,000 Fans on Race Day

Dallas – April 27, 2016 - ACTIVE Network®, the premier global marketplace for activities and events and the industry’s leading provider of data solutions, and Grounded Events Company, owners and managers of the Brighton Marathon and the BM10K, today announced the success of the 7th annual Brighton Marathon Weekend, including an elevated level of engagement with race participants and spectators through new race-day technology and mobile apps. The iconic Brighton Marathon event, which occurred in mid-April, is considered one of the UK’s most popular 26.2-mile and 10K races. More than 13,000 runners took part in the field and over 150,000 fans lined the course to be a part of the weekend’s exciting events. Participants and fans downloaded Brighton Marathon and BM10K mobile apps, which were created and powered by ACTIVE, to provide access to real-time results throughout the weekend, local event information and the ability to quickly register for future events. Over the course of the weekend, Brighton Marathon Weekend organizers saw unprecedented engagement with over 45,000 app downloads, sent more than 1.2 million event notifications and increased onsite registrations for next year’s event by 160% compared to last year.

The Brighton Marathon & BM10K apps received accolades from participants and fans, and greatly contributed to the success of the weekend experience. The mobile apps provided detailed course and event information, along with real-time notifications of individual runners’ progress, elite runners’ pace, predicted finish times, splits and a runner’s position on the course. Runners also received their official time results via a smart device (phone or watch) within seconds of crossing a split point or the finish line.

“We’ve been working with ACTIVE since the first Brighton Marathon on April 18, 2010. Together, we’ve built a powerhouse brand and attracted a community of loyal participants and fans,” said Tom Naylor of Grounded Events Company. “We pride ourselves on the idea that we’re always looking for new ways to engage with our participants, spectators and sponsors. Creating a unique race experience is at the core of what we strive for. With ACTIVE, we are able to push the envelope because of the continual innovation they bring to the table. ACTIVE’s ability to create a custom mobile app that increased engagement, and worked perfectly even with the 45,000 downloads and consistent usage throughout the event weekend, is a testament to their innovation and expertise.”

In addition to the new mobile apps, ACTIVE’s full suite of event lifecycle management technology solutions used at Brighton Marathon Weekend included:

  • ACTIVE’s robust technology platform, ACTIVEWorks®, to centralize its participant, volunteer and team management, registration, marketing, fundraising and data insights.
  • ACTIVE On-Site app to check in participants via their mobile devices and seamlessly assign timing chips, issue race packs and collect payment onsite. Participants and inspired spectators were able to register for the 2017 event, and 12% of the registrations in the first two hours on Sunday came via the app.
  • The industry-leading, ACTIVE Network | IPICO dual frequency RFID system was used to time and track almost 13,000 finishers, resulting in nearly 154,000 separate splits recorded. Combined with ACTIVE Timing software and ACTIVE Results, the organizer and timer were able to quickly configure timing equipment with a user-friendly graphic interface, easily flag timing discrepancies, and automatically highlight results and publish split points for the first time ever to a mobile device.

“We’re proud to be working with the Grounded Events team. They are a visionary group and are always challenging the status quo to deliver the best event experiences for their participants and fans,” said Sam Renouf, general manager of sports for ACTIVE Network. “We provided them with full event lifecycle engagement from registration to volunteer management solutions to accreditation to merchandise fulfillment to timing and live results. ACTIVE is unmatched in offering technology and services with our breadth, scope and quality.”
