LA JOLLA, Calif. - April 3, 2000 - Active.com, the industry's largest and most comprehensive Internet site for recreational sports and online event registration, and USA Triathlon (USAT) - the national governing body (NGB) for the sport of triathlon and duathlon in the United States - today announced a partnership to provide online registration and Web-based services to the triathlon community. As part of the agreement, Active.com is the official online registration service for USAT and a major USAT sponsor.
"Our partnership offers tremendous benefits for all USA Triathlon members, as well as the triathlon community," said Dave Alberga, president and chief executive officer, Active.com. "We are not only saving event organizers time and money with Web tools for registration and administration, but we¡¦re personalizing the Web experience for triathletes by providing a community for athletes to exchange ideas and access current information on their sport."
Through the partnership, both USAT member athletes and event organizers will have a secure, centralized and powerful location to access online tools, content and services to enhance their overall triathlon experience.
"USA Triathlon's relationship with Active.com is a natural step forward for the organization," said John Duke, publisher, Triathlete Magazine. "In Triathlete's recent MediaMark Research subscriber study, it was discovered that almost 90 percent of triathletes have access to a computer and more than 60 percent use the Internet daily. Active.com will help USA Triathlon-sanctioned events grow closer to the participant."
Event organizers now have access to Active.com's Web-based services, at no cost, for all USAT-sanctioned events.
These services include online access to turnkey, secure registration for events, an event sanctioning application process, and the USAT membership database to verify membership status for event participants. USAT member athletes can also access the database to instantly print temporary membership cards, change membership information, or verify membership status.
Event organizers can gain increased exposure for triathlon and duathlon events by leveraging Active.com's distribution network of newspapers and online distributors such as USA Today and Yahoo. With Active.com content delivered to this network around the clock, event organizers can further increase event exposure and participation.
"We are the first NGB to partner with Active.com to provide the company's leading edge, Web-based technology," said Steve Locke, executive director, USA Triathlon. "As triathlon debuts this year as an Olympic sport, responding to the progressive needs of the triathlon community continues to be a top priority. Our partnership with Active.com ensures we can continue to deliver enhanced services as the sport and technology evolves."
