LA JOLLA, Calif. - April 11, 2000 - Active.com, which provides the industry's largest and most comprehensive Internet site for recreational sports and online event registration, has announced today its donation of funds and services to support the first anniversary commemoration of the Columbine High School tragedy, a series of activities planned in Jefferson County, Colo. during the week of April 16. The company will be one of the first to donate funds toward the establishment of the inaugural Columbine Memorial 5K Scholarship and is also providing additional services - including online event registration - for the 1st Annual Columbine Memorial 5K Run/Walk on April 16.
"We continually strive to deliver web services that make sports more enjoyable for both participants and event and league organizers," said Dave Alberga, president and chief executive officer, Active.com. "We now have an opportunity to extend these benefits to Jefferson County in the form of solid community support."
At www.active.com, the 5K Run/Walk participants can not only register online easily and quickly for the race, but they can also designate an immediate donation to the scholarship fund.
"This is an unique event in that 100% of any corporate contributions go directly to funding the scholarship. That's what makes Active.com's contribution even more significant," added Creigh Kelley, event director and president of BKB Ltd. "We're especially excited about our inaugural 5K race. We already have commitments from Kenyan runners Philip Kurui and Peter Tanui, as well as Libbie Hickman and Amy Vandyken."
The scholarship fund will be awarded this year in three $5000 scholarships to students from each of the following high schools: Columbine High School, Dakota Ridge High School and Chatfield High School. Administered annually, the scholarship will recognize those students that demonstrate a willingness to give back to the community through participation in activities such as student government, athletics, performing arts, fine arts and community service.
