La Jolla, Calif. – September 6, 2000 – Which country will win the most Olympic gold medals in swimming? Should the selection method for the Olympic marathon team be changed? Cast your ballot on these and other issues at www.active.com and access Active.com’s innovative online coverage of the 2000 Olympic Games.
With the September 11 launch of its Active on the Road: Sydney site coverage, Active.com will offer sports enthusiasts and athletes around the globe a fresh and informative look at the Games.
Through a daily data feed and direct contact with several competing Olympic athletes, Active.com will deliver timely athlete diaries and updates, plus each day’s results for cycling, swimming, track and field, and triathlon. Site visitors can access an interactive event calendar with event descriptions, venues and results. The site will also offer trivia, history and an extensive photo gallery.
America’s first Olympic triathlete logs on
Jennifer Gutierrez, Active.com fan and captain of the women’s U.S. Olympic Triathlon team, will provide daily diaries and offer an insider’s look at the road to the Olympics. A native Texan, Gutierrez began triathlon only five years ago and is now representing the sport in its Olympic debut. Gutierrez will provide additional insight on Active.com’s Sports You Do weekly online radio show.
Babbling Brooke makes a splash
The official Web site of Olympic swimming favorite Brooke Bennett, Active.com will host live chats and provide personal insight by Bennett throughout the Games. Curious site visitors and passionate swimmers can visit the Babbling Brooke site and ask Bennett questions about competing or log on for personal training tips. Bennett, who is a gold medal favorite for the 800 freestyle and has a strong shot for the gold in the 400 freestyle, will check in with Active.com with timely updates and insight after each event.
Welch adds expert commentary on multisport
Adding personal commentary, former professional triathlete and Australian resident Greg Welch will bring site visitors closer to the Games through his personal contact with the competing Olympic athletes. In Welch’s new role hosting Sydney’s Channel Seven television station (the host country’s Olympic broadcast station), the 35-year old four-time world triathlon champion will cover both the men’s and women’s triathlon races. Channel Seven’s Olympic coverage will only be available in Australia, but Active.com visitors can catch a glimpse of the station’s local flavor through insight supplied by Welch. As Athlete Liaison to the Australian Olympic Committee, Welch will also be acting as a confidant and mentor for Australian athletes competing in weightlifting, women’s softball, fencing, badminton and triathlon. Forced to retire from triathlon earlier this year due to a rare heart condition, Welch continues to provide regular content to Welchie’s Bonzerama (www.gregwelch.com), a site hosted by Active.com.
Active.com’s special site coverage of the Games will continue through the first week of October.
